Happy endings netflix12/16/2023 ![]() ![]() Penny was terminally unlucky in love - she even dated a guy named “Hitler”! - but remained a sunny optimist. Dave was the dopey dreamer, driving his food truck and exploring his Native American heritage. Alex was the ditz who could also polish off a plate of barbecued ribs like nobody’s business. Together, the six-person ensemble was much greater than the sum of its parts, and the show quickly shed its original premise and got busy being a crackerjack joke machine, with rapid-fire gags flying back and forth at a head-spinning pace.Īll six characters filled a typical sitcom role, but with a twist: Max was the frat-boy slob… but one who just happened to be super into dudes. And Happy Endings had some of the most effortless sitcom chemistry of the past decade. But let’s not kid ourselves: Sitcoms aren’t about what they’re “about” they live and die on the chemistry of their cast. Okay, so that’s not the most inspiring premise for a sitcom. They’re literally stuck in the middle, you guys! The sudden split forces their four friends - Jane (Eliza Coupe), Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.), Max (Adam Pally), and Penny (Casey Wilson) - to choose whose side to take, and who to keep hanging out with. ![]() Our kingdom for the ability to stream “ Boys II Menorah” whenever we choose!įor those of you who never piled onto the Happy Endings bandwagon (what, you guys don’t do pile-ons?), Zachary Knighton and Elisha Cuthbert starred as Dave and Alex, a couple who split up after Alex leaves Dave at the altar (for some jerk on Rollerblades, no less). And we’re still not over it.Īnd to pour salt in our still-festering wound, to this day, we can’t watch Happy Endings on any of the major streaming services. Because on that day, ABC callously axed the brilliantly zany sitcom Happy Endings after three simply ah-mah-zing seasons. May 10, 2013: We solemnly refer to it as The Day the Laughter Died. Comment below. We live in a magical time, when thousands of new and old TV shows are available at the click of a button, thanks to streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. The stakes are heightened without tripping over the film’s gentle tone, and it ends up concluding in a lovely and unexpectedly subtle manner. When the film takes a detour into dramatic territory in the latter stages, it does so in a well-earned manner. It makes these comments without being heavy-handed. Instead, it saves some of its anger towards the way in which society is taught that a man’s pleasure is more important than a woman’s. The character makes decisions that will provoke discussion from viewers, but the film’s approach is never judgmental. At the heart of the film is a lovely central performance from Gaite Jensen as Luna who manages to bring complexity to her performance while also being comedically light and fun. In an era when some on social media puritanically bemoan the necessity of sex scenes in film and television, Happy Ending never shies away from the act of sex or female pleasure. It goes without saying that the film benefits from being female-centered. Even though Luna, her friends, and the film take the situation seriously, it does so without losing sight of having fun, and yet Dose’s script and direction never flinch from some home truths about how society looks upon female and male pleasure. While any plot synopsis centers on the threesome element, it’s really a way for the film to segue into an honest and humorous look at female desire and sexual satisfaction.ĭialogue and scenes of sexual activity are very frank, but they never feel gratuitous. What works magnificently about Happy Ending is how it takes its subject seriously, while also being witty about it. ![]() Mink remains oblivious to Luna’s sexual needs and finds herself turning to Eve. Both Luna and Eve make a connection during the date the three of them have, but inevitably complications ensue. They are young, very attractive, but their sex life is very one-sided in that Luna has never experienced an orgasm, a fact that has gone over Mink’s head.Īfter a romantic dinner, the conversation leads to the idea of the two of them having a threesome and it’s here that Eve ( Joy Delima) enters the story. We follow loving couple Luna ( Gaite Jensen) and Mink ( Martijn Lakemeie r ) from their meet-cute at work, all the way to the inner workings of their relationship one year on. From there, the following ninety minutes manage to never outstay their welcome. The film opens nicely on a scene that turns audience expectations on their head. ![]()
